Gabriel guided his horse back to the Troyer house to pick up Emily. He felt bad for Lucy. He knew she was embarrassed, but she had no reason to be. He was actually glad that he could help her.

He saw Emily waiting near the barn for him as he pulled onto the property. He frowned at her unhappy expression. He pulled up close to her and started to get out to help, but she was already climbing into the front seat. “What’s wrong, Em?”

His sister took a deep breath then released it. “I spoke with Aaron.”

“And?” Waiting patiently for her to answer, he steered the buggy back toward the road.

Emily didn’t respond immediately. “I know why Aaron didn’t come to supper.”

Gabriel frowned. “Why?”

She blinked back tears. “Lucy Schwartz.”

“What? How do you know?” He didn’t like the sinking feeling that settled in his stomach.

“I saw them talking together earlier, so I asked him about her. And you know what he said?” She closed her eyes and breathed deeply. “That her late husband was his best friend and she is important to him,” she burst out.

He saw her rapidly blinking back tears. “Emily, if her husband was his best friend, then she would be important to him.” But just how important? Gabriel wondered. Had Aaron been the one he’d seen leaving Lucy’s driveway the other day? How close were Aaron and Lucy? His stomach burned at the thought that they might be closer than friends. “So he didn’t come to supper because of Lucy?”

“Nay, not exactly,” she admitted. “I didn’t get to ask him about that. I saw him with her this at service, and I had to know what she meant to him.”

“And you’re upset by what he told you.” Gabriel decided he wouldn’t get upset until after he’d spoken with Lucy. Then he remembered that they were only friends, and he had no right to be upset. And yet, he cared for her as more than a friend. And that wasn’t good. Maybe he should avoid her for a while until he could think things through. If only he could make himself stay away from her...
